The
August ride - The Alpine Adventure West - beings in Zurich,
Switzerland and following a day of riding in this lovely
area, heads north-northeast, through Germany's Black
Forest and the Alsace region of France. You’ll enjoy the
highest mountains in the Alpine chain, the French Alps.
There’s also an opportunity to ride Europe's two highest
passes, Cime de la Bonette and Col d'Iseran.
We've chosen the Haute Savoie region for our first
double-overnight in France. This mountainous area is a special treat for the eyes, the palate and the
soul.
The French are proud of their – well – Frenchness: Champagne,
Chanel No. 5, camembert, croissants. No wonder when we speak
of the joy of life, it’s in French: “joie de vivre.” The
French believe they have the franchise on culture, cuisine -
and especially, romance. You’ll probably agree when you set
eyes on Lac d'Annecy, a crystal-clear, turquoise mountain lake
in the heart of the Savoie region. The city of Annecy on the
lake is full of history and character.
During the two day visit to the picturesque village of
Talloires, if you choose to make the 25 mile drive around the
lake, you will encounter medieval chateaus at Duingt and
Menthon-St.-Bernard.
Farther down the road in the bustling ski village of Valloire,
you can enjoy breathtaking, panoramic views of the Southern
Alps as you wind up the Col du Galibier. Your motorcycle tires
will dwarf the thin, muscular treads of the bikes that cycle
up this track on the Tour de France each July.
The diversity and beauty of the French landscapes will rev up
your tastebuds for the unique cuisine and mountain character
of the Savoie region. The guidebook, “Off the Beaten Track,
Southern France,” describes tempting menu items such as smoked
meats, sausages, cheeses and crusty breads, as well as fresh
river and lake trout.
Meandering through Italy, Switzerland, and Austria on the
return leg, wonderful differences in food, architecture, and
riding present themselves. A double overnight stop on
another lovely lake - Italy's masterpiece, Lago Maggiore, miles and miles of twisty roads, and
as always, the freedom of a Beach tour combine to make this a
challenging, diverse ride.
